Likert scale

An ordered response format (often 5- or 7-point) for rating agreement, frequency, or intensity.

A Likert scale is a response format in which respondents rate their level of agreement (or frequency, intensity, etc.) on an ordered set of options — typically five or seven points. Common Likert scales for psychology include "Strongly disagree" → "Strongly agree" or "Never" → "Always."

The scale is named after psychologist Rensis Likert, who introduced it in 1932. Most modern self-report assessments use Likert items because the ordered structure lets researchers compute composite scores and run psychometric analyses.
